30.000 sea ships call at the port of Rotterdam annually, they load and discharge about 320 million tons of cargo. Each ship and her
cargo is received and attended by an agent, who takes care of the interests of all parties, ships owners, shippers and forwarding
agents. This is not limited to the activities in the port. The modern agent nowadays acts as a director for the whole process: Supply
Chain Management.
The "Vereniging van Rotterdamse Cargadoors (The association of Rotterdam Ships Agents)" for its part controls the common interest of the agents and the port. In this way they bundle the expertise of the 102 active members as well as the 15 associated members, employing 3,500 people in all sort of aspects, actual matters, on long and short-term bases. Therefore the VRC has a very important input in the quality and the future of the port of Rotterdam.
Ships agents take care of cargo. That also applies for countries far away to arrange transport to or from Rotterdam. Although containers remain as the alluring mass of maintream trade, the majority of Rotterdam agents do handle other cargo flows, such as fluid and dry bulk cargoes, roll-on/roll-off, break bulk and neo-bulk such as paper, pulp, steel and non-ferro metals. They do their work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Therefore the motto in the port is: Call the Agent!
